Bill Debley reported on the Mylar Photo Event with slides showing some of what the group was able to do.

Leslie Krane, professor at CSUN, gave us insights on the assignment for April, Edges.  The idea is to incorporate the edge of the frame into the image.  This can be done by making sure that lines in the image are parallel to the edges of the frame, or by placing the subject off center, or using diagonal lines to draw the eye.  Try moving closer to the subject to remove distractions and gain greater control.  Find unusual vantage points.  Sometimes images are improved by what you don’t show, like including a shadow without showing the object.  Show her something she has not seen before.

Jazan Kozma took first, Norman Spieler second and Rad Bosselman third.  Check our website to see the winning images (Assignment GalleryfStopscameraclub.com).

January Meeting Summary
Robert Fields presented a lecture on “Movement and Motion” for our February assignment. He talked through a number of images showing how to incorporate movement and motion into your work by taking advantage of features like waves, or reducing the shutter speed so that things in motion, like a musician’s hands, can be blurred while their other features are still, or by using a longer lens that accentuates movement compared to a wide angle lens. He reminded us that all the other elements of composition remain important. Mr. Fields judged over 30 very interesting Open Images. First prize went to Dan Katz, second to Jerry Cowart and third to Sharon Sega
1st place Dan Katz
2nd place Jerry Cowart
3rd place Sharon Sega

Sally Mann: A Thousand Crossings
NOVEMBER 16, 2018 - FEBRUARY 10, 2019 AT THE GETTY CENTER

The first major international exhibition of the work of American photographer Sally Mann. The exhibition explores themes of family, memory, mortality, and the Southern landscape as repository of personal and collective memory. Experimental, melancholic, and hauntingly beautiful, Mann’s photographs – many not exhibited before – expose how her relationship with the land has shaped her work and how the legacy of the South continues to permeate American identity. Organized by the National Gallery of Art, Washington, and the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, Massachusetts. Link: http://www.getty.edu/art/exhibitions/sally_mann/ index.html

Many thanks to Christopher Broughton for the terrific judging work on our “Night Street Photography" photos. Christopher’s extensive background in photography and his highly personable teaching made for a great experience for everyone present.  His opening slideshow of inspiring quotes was a great warm-up ... the rest of the session was a real joy-ride!

We are saddened at the loss of Fred Kuretski.  He was a fine judge for our meetings and provided guidance and training to many students.  He will be missed.

Announcement

10/29/2018

November 8 is our very last photo critique meeting of the year.  It is a great time for fabulous night time photography.  So, go out with a friend and shoot for this great assignment:  ”night street photography”.
Not much is needed in the way of equipment:  No special lenses required, a standard 35mm or 50mm lens is good, 24-70mm zoom is good. No flash or tripod required.

Trick or Treat, night time subjects abound. Just look for interesting autos or buses or buildings or people or animals or restaurants, or motorcycles or….whatever. Just handhold and shoot. Use the light from street lamps, store fronts, traffic, traffic lights, door openings, or windows to illuminate your subject. Experiment with levels of lighting and longer and shorter shutter speeds. Above all have fun with the experience… get something you really like, tune it up and submit it to F-Stops entries. Share your stuff with your fellow members and see it up there at the November meeting. Happy shooting!
There are lots of websites with excellent tutorials and tips on night shooting; here, for example, are three worth checking out ….
