Death Valley Photography Workshop with Stephen Johnson

(Must arrive Friday, February 20 for early AM Saturday orientation meeting)

Join us for an unforgettable 4-day photography workshop in one of the most dramatic landscapes on earth — Death Valley National Park. Led by renowned photographer and educator Stephen Johnson, this immersive experience will deepen your understanding of light, composition, and digital workflow while capturing the park’s stunning desert vistas, salt flats, and surreal geology.
Workshop Overview This hands-on workshop blends field photography, instruction, and critique sessions to help you create stronger, more intentional images. Stephen Johnson brings decades of teaching experience and a passion for the natural world, guiding participants to see beyond the obvious and master both technical and creative aspects of landscape photography.

Friday, February 20 – Arrival and early AM Saturday orientation meeting scheduled.
(Attendance at the Saturday morning orientation is required.)
  • Saturday, February 21 – Tuesday, February 24 – Workshop sessions begin early Saturday morning and conclude mid-day Tuesday.
  • Bring laptops to process and share photos.

Possible Shooting Locations:
Zabriskie Point, Mesquite Dunes, Badwater Basin, Artist’s Palette, Dante’s View, Artist’s Drive, Mosaic Canyon, Devils Golf Course and Ubehebe Crater

​Come ready to photograph sunrises over the salt flats, explore the colors of Artist’s Palette, and chase the shifting light of Zabriskie Point — all under the guidance of a master photographer who has spent decades interpreting the American landscape.

About Stephen Johnson:
Stephen Johnson is an internationally acclaimed photographer, educator, and author, recognized as a pioneer in digital landscape photography. His work has been exhibited in major museums and collections around the world, and he has been teaching photography workshops for 47 years in some of America’s most iconic national parks. Honored with induction into the Photoshop Hall of Fame in 2003 and named a Canon Explorer of Light in 2006, Stephen continues to inspire through his lectures at leading industry conferences and universities, as well as by mentoring a select group of emerging artists.


Important details & logistics
  • Cost: $450 per person
  • Group Size: Limited to 10 participants for personalized instruction
  • We will need to carpool between shooting locations. Limit is 4 vehicles.
  • Accommodations: Participants are responsible for booking their own lodging. Lodging in Death Valley fills up quickly — please research accommodations early to ensure it fits your budget.
