Using Studio Strobes with Dan Katz

7/26/2019

Using Studio Strobes with Dan Katz
Thursday August 29,  7pm
@ The Village Northridge Meeting Room
Dan Katz Photography
PictureDan Katz
Dan Katz is doing a workshop, “The use of strobes in the studio for lighting models and how to create different effects with placement and modifiers”.  It will be held on August 29 at 7 p.m., at The Village.  This is for members only and will limited to 10 people.  The cost is $25/person to cover the cost of the model.  You will need to bring a digital camera with hot shoe to participate.

The purpose of this workshop is to demonstrate the use of strobes in the studio for lighting models and how to create different lighting effects with light placement and modifiers.

But I’d like to start with this disclaimer:  This workshop is not a comprehensive how-to for all lighting scenarios; nor does it follow the conventional lighting “rules.”  It’s about how I usestrobes to set a mood and attain my own creative results. Which is to say, other photographers can (and are welcome to) dispute my methods. This is simply what works for me.

If you are planning on attending this workshop – or even if you don’t – I would strongly recommend your watching these three excellent videos in advance. They cover the basics of strobe and studio lighting and will provide a better framework for what we’ll be doing at the workshop, especially in understanding how simply moving around the lights can turn a white background to gray or even black, giving you incredible flexibility and creative control.

• What light does in the studio – part 1:   https://bit.ly/2KoAnHB
• What light does in the studio – part 2:   https://bit.ly/2ZKucmi
• Seven Basic Lighting Setups:  https://bit.ly/2YQejhg

We’ll have a beautiful live model on-set, Megan Amber.

Megan will pose for three different lighting setups.  With each setup, we’ll have time to allow a group of three or four photographers to take pictures before moving on to the next setup.  We’ll randomly assign you to one of the three groups at the beginning of the workshop so you’ll all have time to get in some great shots for your own portfolios.  The Model Release will allow you to show your images, as long as they are not to be used commercially.

I sincerely hope you enjoy the upcoming workshop. See you then.

ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER Bill Debley
I worked in aerospace research and development for almost thirty years and got interested in photography about twelve years ago.  I enjoy looking at photography through an engineer’s eye and capturing u
nusual images. I am active in and have been president of several photography clubs, including judging, producing tutorials and workshops on photography. I've spent most of my summers fly fishing in the Eastern Sierra, in California. Because of this I am very familiar with the beauty and diversity this area has to offer, I started conducting affordable workshops in wildlife and landscape photography. I also conduct local one day photographic workshops entitled: “Photography for the Rest of Us”. I use a wide range of equipment and techniques to achieve the type of feeling and style I want in a photograph. Although I love the out of doors, I love shooting all genres and use everything from pin-hole to 3D anaglyphs to get the shot.
